Designing the Perfect Indoor/ Outdoor Custom Home

Hawaii offers the ideal landscape to inspire custom design for outdoor living. The vibrancy of the Pacific blue waters, abundance of sunshine, and tropical atmosphere serves as the perfect bridge for bringing the great outdoors inside.

Beginning as a family-owned commercial construction business, Pacific Isle Homes has been perfecting the craft of creating upscale and functional outdoor spaces for years. Michael O’Toole, president of Pacific Isle Homes, has taken advantage of his creative perspective towards construction when creating a custom indoor/ outdoor home, stating that, “For me, building a home is such a personal process of creating a piece of art with form and functionality. My passion is collaborating with homeowners to bring life to a home that is a unique artistic expression of their lifestyle and taste”.

This featured home located in Puako Bay balances traditions associated with indoor/outdoor living with playful, unique design elements. At 7,532 square feet, the home is very similar in style to an upscale resort.

The sensation of the design begins long before entering the home itself. A reflection pond and water feature that flows throughout the entire indoor/outdoor living space greets visitors in the front yard. The water feature extends to the backyard, eventually joining the elevated infinity pool with a sheer descent into the swimming pool.

The design also features an enormous ‘living wall’ that measures to be 20 feet tall and 10 feet wide and serves as the home for a variety of tropical vegetation that’s native to Hawaii.

All four of the home’s bedrooms and ensuite bathrooms feature indulgent views of the surrounding ocean. Each bathroom includes a nod to the indoor/outdoor style by having an outside shower. The overall effect is modern in design featuring free-standing bathing bowls.

While the property is polished and sleek overall, a purposeful integration of hardwood walls created from African Mahogany span the entirety of the home’s interior and exterior. A unique element within the home is the living room/ outdoor room’s wooden ceiling which was created from Sinker Wood, a wood that is milled from 100-year old cypress trees native to Florida’s rivers and waters. The wooden elements serve to bridge together the indoor and outdoor elements for an immersive design that’s both artistic and functional.

O’Toole’s creative approach to home design inspires his use of natural elements found on the island. The exterior black Basalt rock wall is produced from lava rock native to the Big Island.

Hawaii offers stunning landscapes that cannot be found anywhere else in the world. Pacific Isle Homes creates flawless custom designs that blend functionality and the natural elements found only on the Big Island.
