Why wood?
One of the oldest interior design materials, wood is beautiful, durable and sustainable. In a world that’s continually showcasing innovative materials, wood remains a leading choice for architects, interior designers, furniture makers and everyone who loves beautiful and functional design.
Wood naturally comes in a range of earth tones from almost white to the darkest blacks. It can be stained in any hue and cut or sculpted into virtually any shape. And the variety inherent in wood grain – creating patterns of lighter and darker wood – is unique to each tree species and ensures that each wood object is distinctly one of a kind.
Wood is also durable and sustainable. Hardwood floors can last for decades, being sanded and refinished when they need a refresh. When used in construction, wood is an inherently flexible material that is resilient to extreme temperatures, wind and high weight loads. And it’s naturally renewable, particularly when sourced from sustainably certified forests around the world.
Wood is a natural resource and forest products industry, points out that wood has “lower thermal conductivity compared to concrete, steel-frame and masonry construction,” making it a great choice for energy-efficient building design. The organization also showcases wood as an ideal choice for Passive House and other energy-based standards, and notes that it can play a leading role in helping the constructing industry meet the provincial requirement that all new buildings be net-zero energy ready by 2032.
Wood is also naturally healthy. Studies have shown that interior spaces incorporating wood can have a calming effect on occupants, lowering both blood pressure and heart rate. Wood is also known for its ability to regulate interior humidity and improve indoor air quality.
When it comes to interiors, the versatility of wood is boundless. From flooring and furniture to doors, wall panels, lighting and objects, wood is all around us. It can even transform a simple ceiling into a stunning design feature. And it remains one of the most popular choices for both free-standing and integrated cabinetry.
With its inner glow, wide range of textures and colors, and inherently tactile nature, wood is a timeless element in interior design and an inspiring way to bring the warmth of the natural world into your living spaces.
