The town of Kalispell provides easy access to one of Flathead’s most treasured features –Wild Horse Island State Park. Native tribes once used this island park for grazing their horses without concern of them being stolen. Wild mares still remain on the island, along with bighorn sheep and elk.

Archaeological evidence indicates that Glacier’s Native American history dates back at least 10,000 years. The first Europeans who later explored this area were fur trappers in the late 1700s.
