The clients were looking to relocate to Whistler full time and needed to find a location for their mountain home. The site they chose was in a great neighbourhood with excellent views, although the steep lot posed a challenge. They also envisioned a modernist design that would fit in with the traditional mountainstyle homes prevalent around Whistler. A three-story reverse-plan home was designed with the main living areas on top to capture the best views and light.
The top floor was turned 90 degrees to gain southwestern exposure for a large patio off the dining area. Steel framing and structure support the cantilevered living room, where floor-to-ceiling windows frame the views beyond and give the impression of being above it all in the tree tops. The exterior is clad in black cedar siding and contrasting concrete. The interiors have a simple aesthetic with organic accents, architectural concrete details and polished concrete floors. This home won an IDIBC award of excellence.
